- IS strategy and planning, and the role of the CIO
- IS and business change
- Managing IS complexity and risk

- IS competencies required in the general manager
Learning outcomes
The module aims to demystify IS. It will help managers understand the major applications of Information Systems including business process management, the use of knowledge and information as a resource, and the applications of internet technology. It will explore how IS can be used to drive competitive advantage and, if not used well, disadvantage. It will discuss the practicalities of IS management, investment and change.
The module will conclude with a review of the competencies that IS requires in today’s functional and general managers.
Information systems are now so embedded in all aspects of business that managers must have a good working knowledge of IS and how to work with IS professionals. They need to understand how to access the huge value that information systems can deliver while minimising the major risk and cost that they can represent. As such, IS has implications for most areas of management.
